Gentofte station

Gentofte station is the station closest to our house. I have fond memories from my youth when I often played badminton matches at Gentofte Badminton Club. Not living in Gentofte at the time, I always took the train to this station. Also, in those days, the signals and points controls were visible when you were waiting for the train at the platform. You could watch the lights on the control table change as the train approached. Exciting for a young boy.

Not so exciting is the fact that the station saw the largest train catastrophe in Danish history in 1897. An express train coming from the north passed a stop sign and hit a local passenger train full of people going home from visiting Gentofte. Forty people were killed, and 37 were seriously wounded. The picture on the right shows the carnage.
